Golisano Foundation 2012 Healthcare Leadership Award Winner
Mark Orlando, PhD, MS (Healthy Hearing)
Mark Orlando is an audiologist and director of Research and Education in Audiology for the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). He earned is Master of Science in Audiology and Speech Pathology from Pennsylvania State University, his Doctorate in Audiology and Speech Pathology from the University of Washington and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School. Mark specializes in evaluating the hearing of infants, young children and difficult to test populations, fitting cochlear implants, performing research using the auditory brainstem response to investigate toxicity levels and brain maturation as well as using otoacoustic emission to evaluate cochlear function. He also mentors/supervises the next generation of audiologists.
Mark became involved in Special Olympics’ Healthy Athlete program through clinical research he had been doing with the organization. He has been doing hearing screenings at local and statewide Special Olympic events for the past few years. In fact, Mark feels that the Special Olympic program not only benefits the athletes with ongoing monitoring but also benefits the volunteers from graduate programs at Nazareth College, Syracuse and the University of Buffalo.
“The volunteers obtain many hours of practice, and they see a lot of situations that they probably wouldn’t get in their day-to-day clinic experience,” Orlando said. He added that the experience turns future audiologists into advocates for people with disabilities and gives them the feeling that volunteer work is important as a health care professional's.
